Steps to do Ganesh Chaturthi puja at home

The Ganesh Chaturthi sthapana puja is one of the most important pujas and not everyone has a clear idea of what and how the sthapana puja performed. The devotion is the devotion is the vital part of any puja, so in that case the simplest gestures and pooja are like sacred rituals.
The basics of the sthapana start with the preparation of the kalash. The kalash should be filled with clean water, 1 suparu, some laxmi, kumkum (vermillion),haldi (turmeric), attar, 5 betel leaves (on the edges of the mouth of the kalash) and a coconut. The next step involves spreading handful of rice grains on the place over which you need to place supari haldi and kumkum (vermillion) on the supari. This is where the Ganesh will sit. Once the sthapana is done, you must spread 5 paan leaves and on each leaf you need to place one supari, haldi-kumkum, dates/apricots etc on each paan leaf.

 

The next step focuses on the vastra of Ganpati. There are various decorative vastaras  and shringar one is supposed to look after for Ganpati. Mukut, Mala/Maitri, Bracelets are some of the shringar.  Put a garland of fresh flowers over Ganpati Bappa. Also offer His vahan, undhir mama, the Mouse the various things that you would offer Ganpati.Offer Ganpati Bappa and undhir mama (mouse), the prasad which is his favourite, the Modaks.

Recite a PranPrathista mantra to bring breath into the idol. This is an invocation found in the Rig Veda. Once the ‘Pranpratishtha’ is done, then you need to light the lamp and incense sticks to please the ‘God’.

Perform simple aarti and offern incense and flowers. Here you offer 21 Druva grass blades, 21 Modakas, and Flowers to Ganesha. The number 21 signifies – the five organs of perception, five organs of action, five vital airs (pranas), five elements, and the mind.

You need to apply a Tikka of red Sandalwood paste on the forehead of the Deity and keep the coconut along with the idol. You can also keep fried grains.

Recite the 108 names of Lord Ganesha (or simply pray).

Please note, this is one form of pooja that is performed by most families and priests, there are many more other forms that can be followed as per other communities.
